Welcome to Chapter 3
Birth involves more than one muscle or one part of the body. In this chapter, we’ll explore how the uterus, abdominal muscles, diaphragm, hips, and pelvic floor contribute to movement, support, breathing, and the birth process.
As a doula, you do not need to diagnose muscle dysfunction or provide clinical treatment. Your role is to build an understanding of the body, offer respectful comfort measures within your training, observe what may help a client feel supported, and collaborate with the client's care team when appropriate.
What You'll Learn
By the end of this chapter, you should be able to:
Identify the major muscle groups involved in pregnancy, labor, and birth.
Explain the basic role of the pelvic floor.
Describe the relationship between breathing, tension, movement, and relaxation.
Recognize that every birthing person's experience and physical needs are different.
Identify when a concern belongs with a qualified healthcare professional.

Use this guide as you move through the four lessons. Write down unfamiliar terms, questions you want to research, and practical ways you might support a client.

Include these sections in your guide:
Key anatomy terms
The four lesson summaries
A body-awareness reflection
A doula application worksheet
Space for questions and further learning
Before You Continue: Reflect
Take a moment to consider:
What do you already know about the pelvic floor?
What have you heard about breathing and relaxation during birth?
Which parts of birth anatomy would you like to understand better?
How can you share information without making a client feel that their body is doing something wrong?
Chapter Knowledge Check
Before moving on, see if you can explain in your own words:
Why is the uterus important during labor?
What is one function of the pelvic floor?
Why should doulas avoid assuming that every client needs the same position or comfort technique?
You do not need to memorize every anatomical detail. Focus on understanding the basics and knowing the limits of your role.
