Anatomy and Physiology for Doulas

Understanding the Body Behind Birth

Birth is physiological—and the more we understand the body, the more intentionally we can support the people who move through it.

Anatomy & Physiology for Doulas is a foundational course designed to help doulas connect what they know about birth with what is actually happening inside the body.

You'll explore the bones and muscles involved in birth, pelvic anatomy, movement and gravity, the nervous system, touch and acupressure, and the physiology of lactation and early postpartum.

Throughout the course, we'll continually return to one question:

What does this mean for my work as a doula?

This course is educational in nature and does not replace clinical education, medical training, or professional scope-of-practice requirements.

You'll leave with a stronger understanding of:

  • The anatomy of the pelvis and its relationship to birth

  • The muscles and pelvic floor

  • Movement, positioning, and gravity

  • The nervous system and stress response

  • Touch, pressure, and comfort

  • Basic acupressure concepts

  • Lactation and postpartum physiology

  • How anatomy and physiology can inform doula support
